Sketch With 64 Colors (2007) Sketch With 64 Colors is an improvisation on two instruments: a vintage Buchla 200 synthesizer from the 1970s and a laptop computer. The laptop controls the Buchla via the Vaschmaschina. The name Sketch With 64 Colors alludes to the fact that there are 64 colors in the "classic" box of Crayola crayons, which was the first box to have a built-in sharpener. Improvising on the Buchla mimics the freedom and spontaneity of drawing with crayons--partly because it is difficult to take oneself too seriously when one hears the wackiness of which the instrument is capable. Sounds are created by connecting modules with brightly-colored patch cords, so as the sound takes shape, the surface of the Buchla begins to resemble a multicolored sketch. |
